Site Stuff

Various flotsam to dish out before I disappear for a while:

Pardon Our Dust

I upgraded our CMS software last night, and am still working out the kinks. Some modules that worked with the previous version are no longer viable, so things will look slightly (or radically) different around here. For some reason this site is not producing full web feeds. For those of you (whoever you are) who care about that stuff, I'm working on restoring them to their former glory.

(Same-day update: I found the setting to restore the feeds to "full text." Carry on.)

Some things were never meant to be articles:

Food and Drink Ethics Statement

(Updated as noted.)

As seen on the Vinography wine blog (and tipped off by Winecast), I will take a moment to lay out the terms and conditions that my food and drink writing is informed by. I will update this page as necessary. If something is not addressed that is of concern to you, please let me know and I will attend to the matter.

Out of the Box Functionality

I'm sure I bore people to tears with this assertion, but I mention that ethmar.com is "not a blog" from time to time because it theoretically helps tear down the "box" that has built up around the weblogging phenomenon. For example, I just added "trackback" functionality to this site yesterday. Aha, trackbacks are a purely "blogging" function, you might say. I say, why "just" blogs?

Design Update

August 28, 2006

I took the liberty of setting the new "default" template. This one is a blend of the default Drupal template that we've been using for several months, and a customized one that is more to my/our liking. It's not completely "there" yet, but I believe that the "bloggy" look has been essentially eradicated and over time will firm up to reflect the true nature of the site.

HTML vs CSS Layout SMACKDOWN

(Updated after the jump)

GAAAAAAAAHHHHH.

I am in the throes of trying to hack together the new and improved layout for ethmar.com. Currently, we are using a default Drupal template which has several drawbacks, the least of which being that this site is not a blog (I can't stress it enough as it dovetails into the next point), and unfortunately, the bloggy appearance discourages exploration. There is much more to the site than the front page, including Recipes, Wine, and Movie Reviews. And more is on the way, once the new layout is designed and approved.

Ethmar.com is Not a Blog

by Ethan Johnson
July 27, 2006

The open source software movement has brought about at least two items that involve clever word-play in their names: LAME, and WINE. Respectively, they mean LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder, and WINE Is Not an Emulator. Following this line of thought, ethmar.com should be changed to EINAB (EINAB Is Not A Blog). As offline work continues (read: daydreaming and saying "what if" a lot) on this site, and we gear up to make this site the best it can be, I'd like to take a moment to write a short note and reinforce the fact that this site is NOT a blog, despite the default-ish Drupal layout that currently gives that impression.
