First the World, Then Recorded History

The older I get, the more intellectual kinship I feel with people like Dave Rogers, who says "technology doesn't change what we do, just how we do it." Actually, I am finding that the older I get, and more to the point, the busier I am with other concerns, the less interest I have in whatever purports to be "world-changing". I suppose this is why a blog post titled 5 Ways Social Media Will Change Recorded History caught my eye and inspired me to respond publicly.

Anthrax Memories

There are days I hover over the "unsubscribe" button for a blog called PressThink, as I'm not in the journo biz, and can probably read Romanesko if I really want to stay abreast of how many layoffs are happening domestically at the big newspaper outlets. Jay Rosen tends to be flogging his latest "citizen journalism" experiment, and I just don't have the calories for that stuff anymore. Have fun, I say, to those who do. But I keep the feed in my rotation because items like this one come along once in a while: Three Vital Questions for ABC News About its Anthrax Reporting in 2001

I have one vital question: Where has everybody been?

MLS: FC Dallas at Houston Dynamo

Game 2 of the Schellas Hyndman era. I probably shouldn't keep tacking that on, but after 3 coaches in one year, "watch this space" seems to be operative until it isn't. Since this was a road game, YOUR investigative bullet points have the day off:

Is Nick Carr Making Us Stupid?

Whenever I would subject myself to a friendly game of chess with my father, I knew I was in deep trouble when, after a long, stonefaced silence, he would exhale and murmur, "okay, I'll be a sucker." Checkmate was sure to follow in short order.

Blinded By the Bewbs

News flash: I am a red-blooded heterosexual male. Happily married, but still subject to various hormonal, social, biological, and normative conditions that say, compel me to note that various women are attractive (read: hawt) while others are not attractive. To me. However, what bothers me lately is that I have been catching myself applying a huge double standard to female athletes. My one-line defense/excuse has been provided above, but the question is, why? And how does this happen? Let's explore:

Minimum Security Revisited

It has been a long time since I clicked over to read the latest exploits of the extremely left-wing web comic called Minimum Security. Extreme politics aren't my bag, man, but for the purposes of leaving a snarky blog comment I hopped over there figuring extreme views on recycling and attempts at "living green" would be nary a stone's throw away. I was correct. Upon further review, I simply must exercise my Fair Use rights and share a few thoughts.

MLS: FC Dallas at Kansas City Wizards

This game was broadcast in stunningly awful 480i on Fox Sports Net, not that I'm complaining since I couldn't be at the game. But seriously? I thought Univision and Telefutura had picture quality issues until tonight. Oof. Let's go live to the DVR (spoilers follow):

MLS: Colorado Rapids at FC Dallas - Recap + Photos

Sold out, baybee!

Holy crappin' moley.

I managed to attend the home opener for FC Dallas. I got tickets in the "obnoxious" section (116) in the 2nd row. Amazing seats. If we were any closer to the action, we'd have been on the field playing for the team. We were right behind the goal, and I commented to my game pal that we'll for sure know if the shot goes in as long as the attempt is made on our end of the field.
