I wish I could tell you that what I'm about to describe is some exotic food or interesting sexual position, but it's not. My guilty pleasures are two TV shows: Boston Public and Smallville.
At least Boston Public is a David E Kelley show. Smallville is on the WB! The WB for Pete's sake!!
Part of my reason for liking Boston Public is that they don't have a staff of drop-dead gorgeous teachers. They have Fyvush Finkel, the American eagle of the small tube. The teachers en masse are many odd people with very odd personalities combining to make a very weird yet interesting chemistry. David Kelley still has his edge in this show, with so many bizarre topics your head will spin. My favorite of all the characters on the show are the principal and the vice principal. The dynamic between the two of them is remarkable and bizarre all at the same time!
Best weird topic of all time was the straight-A student whose mother locked him in the basement to punish him for some teenager misdemeanor. In retaliation, he ties up his mother and keeps her in the basement for a couple of weeks. While this is going on, one of the teachers is noticing a change in this particular student and keeps going to their home to see what is happening and to try to speak to the mother. No such luck. That was the end of last season. The start of this season has this student bringing a human hand into the chemistry teacher and asking if they could dissect it. So the concerned teacher from last season shows up at the kid's house along with another teacher and asks to see the mother. Well, sure enough we finally see the mother and she's carrying a tray of cookies. The second teacher knocks the tray out of her hands only to show her one hand is missing and she has a stump!! The son took his mother's hand to school to dissect!!!! EW!!
I'm only sharing a tiny fraction of what goes on in this kooky high school, but check it out some Monday night when you're looking for some trashy show check out.
The more embarrassing of my two guilty pleasures is Smallville. It's a cross between The X-Files and Archie Comics, with Superboy thrown in. Clark Kent is very hunky. Lana Lang is so good looking she's been described as being creepy! Then there is Lex Luthor. Let me pause for a moment so I can collect my thoughts about the actor who plays Lex.
Hubba, Hubba, Hubba, Hubba.
MEOW.
I don't know where they found this guy, but he and Clark are friends. This actor shaves his head for the show, and MEOW! He has IT. His charisma goes off the charts. Even the men that have reviewed the show make the same comment: This guy is HOT.
I apologize for drooling, but this bald skinny white guy is HOT. He's a snappy dresser, with a twinkle in his eye that will knock you over. WOW! I really am embarrassed at how totally smitten I am with this character. There is this edge of danger about him because as we all know Lex Luthor is Superman's archenemy. I keep waiting for Lex to do something awful to Clark, but he doesn't. In fact, one reviewer seems to think that Lex is jonesing for Clark. Clark of course is jonesing for Lana. No-one is getting what they want. You can cut the sexual tension with a knife, baby!
Drooling aside, the X-File part of the show is what got me interested in the first place. After the meteor containing Clark falls to earth people in Smallville start having odd things happen to them. For example, a weird bug boy tries to kill the high school football star by jumping on the roof of his truck. Sure it's a stupid idea, but the guy is a bug. Bugs are not known for their super intellect. Clark saves the jock post bug attack, who happens to be Lana's boyfriend. Foolish, misguided Clark. Here was his chance to have Lana all to himself and he saves the jock. Will he ever learn?
I don't think he ever does because his longing for Lana is one of the recurring themes in the show. Just like Lex's unrequited feelings for Clark.
This show is on Tuesday nights on the WB; just watch it once to catch Lex. It will be worth it! <EM>
